PM Modi attacks Mamata Banerjee over demonetisation: ‘Those who looted poor’s chit fund money are raising finger at me’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked Mamata Banerjee for opposing government’s demonetisation
move saying those who looted poor people with chit fund scam are doubting
government’s intention. Addressing a rally in Agra after launching the Pradhan
Mantri Gramin Awas Yojna, Modi said,”I know what sort of people are raising
their voice against me? Does the country not know whose money was invested in
chit fund business? Lakhs and crores of poor people invested money in chit
funds. But with the blessings of politicians, crores and crores of rupees have
vanished.”
“Due to chit fund loss, hundreds of head
of families were forced to commit suicide. Look at history and they are raising
fingers at me,” he said in barbs aimed apparently at Banerjee, who had been
rallying political leaders against the demonetisation decision.
Modi also cautioned people holding Jan
Dhan accounts not to allow themselves to be used for laundering the money of
the rich by depositing their ill-gotten wealth as they could unnecessarily get
into problems with law.
Modi also said that lakhs of crores of
rupees have been deposited in banks since November 8 after the move to
demonetise the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes was announced. “5 lakh crore
deposited in banks since demonetisation… this has been done to change the
fortunes of the youth, and for the betterment of the poor,” said the prime
minister.
Modi said the country will emerge
victorious after demonetisation that was a “test by fire”. “As I said on the
very first day when I announced the decision, it is a time-consuming process.
It will cause inconvenience and a little hardship but, I believe, the nation
will come out victorious from this test by fire,” said Modi.
He said his government has been flexible
in implementing the demonetisation decision and effected alterations as the
need arose. “I have asked for 50 days. It’s been just 10 days and over 5,000
crore rupees have already been deposited in banks… the banks will infuse this
money in the markets,” he added.
Modi said he did not take the
demonetisation decision to trouble anyone but for the good of the coming
generations.
